Cinematic Land Surveying
You can read about Austria in newspapers, hear about it in the news, you can talk about Austria in a pub, you can explain Austria to foreigners, foreigners can explain Austria, you can try to explain Austria to yourself or you can travel through Austria in order to rediscover it.
This film attempts to do all these.
Four directors traced the political and social state of Austria and its inhabitants after the change of government. They sought out microcosms and found people whose private lives are filled with politics.
Barbara Albert made women her focus, especially working women and single mothers.
Michael Glawogger travelled across Austria as a hitchhiker.
Ulrich Seidl chose a notorious writer of reader's letters and a married couple, who see themselves as the real saviors of their homeland, while feeling surrounded by foreigners.
Michael Sturminger visited Austrian living rooms with TV-presenter Dieter Chmelar.
Four directors, four points of view and many realities.
